Her mother was a military wife, and her family relocated to Louisiana when Decker was just nine years old. Decker was a winner in a talent contest when she sang her favorite song by Patsy's I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart. Decker was moving to Georgia by the time she reached the age of 15. She began writing songs and made regular trips to Nashville in search of any record deals. Her songs were being offered to record labels and other artists by an agent from Big Yellow Dog Records agent at the age of 17. Decker's songs were reviewed from Mercury Records president David Massey and passed on to L.A. Reid of Island/Def Jam group affiliated labels group L.A. Reid was able to sign Decker to a contract. The album of Decker, Daughter of a Gypsy (or Sweet American Dreams), was pulled by Mercury when two of her singles failed to chart on the chart for country.
